Galapagos Islands - A Garden of Eden, Ecuador (DEU 15') The volcanoes of the Galápagos Archipelago rise steeply from the depths of the Pacific Ocean about 1000 kilometers west of the South American coast, forming 15 main islands and dozens of rocks and islets. Charles Darwin came here in search of evidence of the Biblical story of creation. Perhaps he expected to find a new Garden of Eden on the Galápagos, but he found something far more precious: the flora and fauna of the Galápagos revealed a continuous process of evolution shaped and guided by environmental influences. The Galápagos Archipelago, with its incomparable variety of plants and animals, is in fact a showcase of nature, and as such, has earned its place at the top of UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Galapagos - Der Garten Eden (DEU, 1996) Regie: Wolfgang Katzke Karg und bizarr ragen die Vulkane des Galápagos-Archipels aus den Fluten des Pazifischen Ozeans. Galápagos - das sind rund 45 Inseln unterschiedlicher Grösse, fast 1.000 Kilometer vom südamerikanischen Festland entfernt. Ein Abbild des Garten Eden hoffte Charles Darwin auf Galápagos zu finden. Er war ausgezogen, um die biblische Schoepfungsgeschichte zu beweisen. Was er fand, belehrte ihn eines Besseren. Die abgeschlossene Tier- und Pflanzenwelt auf Galápagos zeigte ihm, dass alle Lebewesen einer kontinuierlichen, von ihrer Umwelt beeinflussten Evolution unterliegen. Das Galápagos-Archipel ist ein Schaufenster der Natur: deshalb wurde es mit seiner unvergleichlichen Fauna und Flora vor allen anderen Orten auf die Liste des Welterbes der UNESCO gesetzt.
