07:00 Power of Play

Power of Play. DOCUMENTARY FROM. In the high-stakes game of life, why do so many animals spend so much time at play? What does frolicking have to do with surviving? The Power of Play sheds new light on this most joyous, yet essential behavior. A nearly universal activity among mammals, play is more than just fun - it is serious business. Wolves and dogs develop hunting and fighting skills by wrestling; elk, moose, and deer learn to escape predators by playfully chasing; and children learn to interact and trust through play. Poignant stories illustrate the tremendous power of play. At a zoo, one polar bear refuses to interact with other bears, threatening her ability to breed. It takes another persistent and playful polar bear to change her mind. At an aquarium, camouflaged humans play with orphaned sea otters , providing them with developmental skills critical to their survival. The Power of Play also answers questions such as why and how play evolved, why some animals remain playful as they age, and what happens when play is absent. This special proves that life is a game that must be played USA 2007.

15:00 The Last Trimate

The Last Trimate. DOCUMENTARY FROM. In the late 60s, legendary anthropologist Louis Leakey appointed three women to study and care for the great apes of the world: Dian Fossey was asked to study the gorillas, and her murder by poachers led to the making of "Gorillas in the Mist"; Jane Goodall was allocated chimpanzees, and to this day travels the world raising funds and awareness; and Birute Galdikas was sent to Borneo to document orangutans. Thirty-five years later Birute is still there, based in the appropriately named Camp Leakey, and is responsible for the longest study of an animal species by a single person ever conducted. Her crusade is compelling, and this stunning, high definition documentary is an account of her lifelong fight to save the diminishing world of Indonesia's wild Orangutans - a habitat threatened by rampant deforestation and palm oil plantations. The Last Trimate features the past, present and future of Camp Leakey in Kalimantan, through the eyes of Dr Galdikas and also looks at the work of the Australian Orangutan Project in this region.

When this happens, macaque troops undergo a process called fission: the group splits into two. This is because the territory can no longer support such a massive troop. Alankomaat 2009.

22:00 Underbelly NZ

Underbelly NZ. ZEALAND CRIMINAL DRAMA SERIES FROM. Based on true events, this is the story of the real Mr Asia, Marty Johnstone and New Zealand's first ever drug cartel, The Syndicate. The story of how a boy from Auckland's North Shore became an international playboy with an industrial scale global drug empire. A true event in New Zealand's history that is almost Shakespearean in its charting of the rise and fall of this extraordinary character, who due to a penchant for his own product and a misplaced trust in his friends, ultimately became the architect of his own demise. Set in the 70s when New Zealand's most notorious criminals and young entrepreneurs got together to grow a small-scale Kiwi operation that soon gained momentum, eventually spawning a cartel that spanned the globe. This is essentially a coming of age story, where sex, drugs and rock 'n roll held New Zealand in its thrall, where big dreams became a glittering reality and living in the fast lane was de rigour. Uusi-Seelanti 2011.
