On the North West coast of Madagascar live the Zafimaniry people who are wood cutters and craftsmen reputed for the quality of their work with wood. Their subtle, geometric designs bear witness to their way of life. The film tells the story of Chulio and Jean, two young Zafimaniry who are going to build a traditional house, following the advice given by the elders. NOUVELLE-CALÉDONIE, UN LAGON EN HÉRITAGE
The Caledonian lagoon is a natural environment featuring an outstanding degree of biodiversity. Possessing one of the world's largest barrier reefs, New Caledonia offers a wonderful opportunity to study the biodiversity of coral ecosystems, the sheer richness of which is comparable to that found in the tropical rainforests. To present the various aspects of current scientific research, the director Jacques-Olivier Trompas takes us on a short trip back in time to the days when this lagoon was first formed, thanks to paleontological studies of the coral. He goes on to assess man's impact on this environment from prehistory to the present day, from traditional fishing through to modern industrial and urban activities. Thanks to the work of the researchers, he has been able to draw up an accurate overview of the biodiversity of the coral reefs, and attempts to predict the future based on research in this area, and to identify ways of influencing this (including among other things by having the Caledonian lagoon listed as UNESCO World Heritage).
